I could not decide which size pepper mill to purchase and I wish I had purchased the next size up. This one works well but is a little difficult to hold because it is so small. I wanted a small one to sit by my stove for use when cooking, and this works well for that except that I am having trouble getting used to the small size. Otherwise, top quality item. This is the same pepper grinder we bought around twenty-five years ago. We bought this one for our daughter (a true blue pepper lover) who has moved out on her own. It is such an amazing grinder—never fails, easily adjustable, such an accommodating shape, and beautiful, to boot. They even upgraded the little ball on top so that it doesn't roll away so easily when refilling time comes around.I bought this as a gift for my husband with the matching salt grinder. We've been through about two pepper grinders and they never seem to hold up over the long haul. With this one, I am hoping we will not need to make another purchase, and so far it is by far the best pepper grinder right from the start - you don't have to grind and grind and grind to get a decent amount of pepper out!The black wood is attractive and the size fits well in the hand. The only drawback, and this is minor, is that it was packaged just loose in the box, with only a small tag around the neck where I was hoping for perhaps a bit of documentation on how to care for it or what to do if it breaks (after all, this was not a cheapo pepper grinder)! This grinder was delivered on time but it’s missing the adjustment grind knob. Also there is a small chip in the paint on the bottom of the grinder and bits of pepper in the grinder. The apparent white undercoat, see photo, will not look good if the visible área chips. I’m intending on returning it.Update: 11/24/2012I like (love) this pepper mill as much as the the larger version. It's a great pepper mill at a great price.I haven't used this product yet, but I have the larger version and really like it. My review is more geared toward the seller, not the product. So I don't know if it's fair to rate the product at 3 stars, especially since I haven't used it yet.Pros:(1) Got it fast.(2) I don't think you'll find this product cheaper anywhere else. $25 shipped to your door is a great deal.Cons:As others have noted, my grinder arrived in a small, padded envelope, which is inadequate packaging or protection for a product such as this that is relatively heavy and has a wooden base. My grinder arrived with a couple of dings in the wood, one of which removed the paint, exposing bare wood. I touched it up with a black Sharpie. If you're willing to take a chance on your grinder arriving in less than "brand new" condition, this is the way to go; otherwise, spend a little more money and shop elsewhere. My first Peugeot mill lasted me the better part of 20 years. Peugeot mills are an excellent value because the mechanism is well designed and durable. The style of the Fidji mill is nice, but the fact is -- it kicks out the pepper exactly like I like it. Experiment with pepper blends because of the varying densities, but I use this grinder for Tellicherry and similar peppercorns. It's definitely easier to clean than the old school designs. I have the matching salt mill, just to have a pair for serving, but it's not necessary to have the Peugeot salt mill from a functional standpoint. The matching salt mill has a ceramic mechanism is preferable due to the corrosive nature of salt+steel. The design is beautiful. But, as we often hear, it's what's on the inside that counts. In this case, I'm disappointed. The grinder arrived with peppercorns already in it. Not sure if that is how they ship them or if someone else had it first and returned it.This grinder would only produce a medium to fine grind. Loosening the top knob had little effect. In fact, the knob fell off in my attempt to get a coarse grind. When I contacted customer service to return the item, they didn't seem interested in being helpful but were sure to tell me all the restrictions on returns--must be unused, in original packaging, etc. This was *after* I told them the grinder is defective, doesn't adjust. Any additional messages sent to them only got me an auto-response saying, "Your message has been noted."To recap: Beautiful product that looks and feels nice. Doesn't perform as described. Customer service is minimally helpful.this pepper mill is small and mighty! Replacing my first one after over 20 years! I am a single person and just cook for me so it is the perfect size. Simple to turn for the needed mill and easy to load. Classic design for my home! And I got a great price and delivered quickly for holiday time.HAVE TRIED LOTS OG DIFFERENT KINDS OF MILLS BUT THIS IS THE BEST EVER I WAS ADVISED BY A CHEF TO BUY O MILL WITH A PUEGEOT WHEEL AS HE FELT THEY WERE SUPERIOR TO THE REST HE WAS SO RIGHTI have the salt mill and now the matching pepper...great mechanism, works well every time, looks good too!Very sturdy and solid...easy to fill and use.Great itemLove this Grinder!Purchased as a Gift for a friend !wish some one had bought me such a lovely item! a must have for all foodies! Long story short: Tolle Mühle, würd ich wieder kaufen.
